Archery had a large role in human daily life for thousands of years from ancient times until about 1750, when the gun began to supplant it for hunting and warfare quite quickly. Societies all over Europe, north Africa, like Egypt, Persia (Iran), India, China and Japan remember their greatest archers. I am sure that other countries do too.

Immigration law in Arizona was recently struck down by a judge who favored the federal government’s claim that the bill is divisive, has no merit and violates the constitution. Knowledge of diamond and the origin of its many connations starts in India, where it was first mined. The word most generally used for diamond in Sanskrit is translitereated as vajra, “thunderbolt,” and indrayudha, “Indra’s weapon.” Because Indra is the warrior god from Vedic scriptures, the foundation of Hinduism, the thunderbolt symbol indicates much about the Indian conception of diamond.

Vine cuttings from the Cape of Good Hope were brought to the penal colony of New South Wales by Governor Phillip on the First Fleet (1788).[9] An attempt at wine making from these first vines failed, but with perseverance, other settlers managed to successfully cultivate vines for winemaking, and Australian made wine was available for sale domestically by the 1820s.[10] In 1822 Gregory Blaxland became the first person to export Australian wine, and was the first winemaker to win an overseas award.[11] In 1830 vineyards were established in the Hunter Valley.[9] In 1833 James Busby returned from France and Spain with a serious selection of grape varieties including most classic French grapes and a good selection of grapes for fortified wine production.[9] Wine from the Adelaide Hills was sent to Queen Victoria in 1844, but there is no evidence that she placed an order as a result. The production and quality of Australian wine was much improved by the arrival of free settlers from various parts of Europe, who used their skills and knowledge to establish some of Australia’s premier wine regions. For example, emigrants from Prussia in the mid 1850s were important in establishing South Australia’s Barossa Valley as a winemaking region.

Latin America’s ancient ruins are one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions. Waves of travelers wash up on the inland shores of famous archaeological sites like Tikal, Tenochtitlan, and Chichn Itz. Those who plan a quiet, solitary trip to these awe-inspiring monuments to human history and ingenuity might feel disappointed at the number of other visitors they have to share these ruins with; however, not every ancient city that science has uncovered is quite so inundated with gawking tourists. The Mayan city of Cahal Pech is one of antiquity’s best-kept secrets, which one can visit in relative privacy, and is just as jaw-dropping (not to mention historically significant) as its more famous neighbors.
